Horse Fear Help
Does your horse need help with fear? Whether you need your horse to be a dutiful trail mount or an unflappable competitor in the show arena, putting on a brave face is a challenge for many of our equine companions. We are working against eons of ancestral programming; spook first and ask questions later. Despite his inherent instincts, regular exposure to the unusual will help your horse navigate the world with ease and confidence. With a matter-of-fact attitude, incorporate the unexpected into your daily routine.
Wave your jacket, carry a plastic garbage bag, casually toss a rope across your horse’s back, or jiggle a tree branch while the two of you enjoy a leisurely stroll. Introduce unfamiliar items and new activities slowly, always allowing your horse to time to approach and investigate. Use relaxation and softening work at the first sign of anxiety. If he’s having trouble handling a situation, return to a task in which he feels secure. Always stay within your horse’s comfort level. If he’s fully prepared before you move on to the next step, he’ll be able to handle the next challenge more easily.
