Mounting and Dismounting from the Right Side
Mounting and dismounting from the right side as often as you do from the left is better for both your horse and your tack. Stepping into the same stirrup will eventually stretch the adjustment holes and leather of your fender or stirrup leathers. Alternating sides also gives your horse a chance to use the muscles on both sides of his body when you hop on board. Also, you never know when you'll be in a situation where you have to get on from the right side, such as on a narrow trail. Help your horse acclimate to being mounted from the off side by letting him see you hop up and down next to the right side of the saddle a few times. Then, give a gentle pull on the stirrup to desensitize him to your weight. Make sure he’s relaxed and confident before stepping all the way up. If he gets nervous at any point, stop, drop back to the ground, and give him some reassurance. Before your first right-sided dismount, lean into your horse’s field of vision and stroke his neck and shoulder so that he's prepared for your unusual descent.
